A new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series is in production, featuring a script by Nier creator Yoko Taro and direction by franchise veteran Kazuya Tsurumaki.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is heading back to our screens, but the franchise is stepping into uncharted territory with a major creative shake-up. Announced during the series 30th-anniversary event in Yokohama, Studio Khara confirmed that a brand-new anime series is officially in production. Series creator Hideaki Anno is stepping down from writing duties, passing the torch to Yoko Taro, the mastermind behind the Nier franchise. Franchise veteran Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for his work on the Rebuild films and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, will direct the project alongside production partner CloverWorks, with composer Keiichi Okabe also crossing over from the Nier team.
For a universe famous for definitive and sometimes polarizing endings, bringing in Yoko Taro feels like the exact right kind of chaotic brilliance. Every iteration of Evangelion so far has essentially closed the book on its narrative loop, meaning the franchise has historically relied on reboots rather than direct continuations. However, Yoko Taro is uniquely qualified to handle the existential dread, identity crises, and strange sci-fi themes that define the Evangelion identity. His signature knack for subverting player and viewer expectations makes him the ideal successor to carry the torch without sparking a fan revolt.
With production details still under wraps, the project is likely sitting in the early conceptual stages at Studio Khara and CloverWorks. Streaming audiences and anime fans will be watching closely to see how this creative pairing reinterprets one of the most influential properties in animation history. As we wait for a first trailer or release window, the big question remains how this new entry will fit into the wider canon, but pairing Yoko Taro with Evangelion guarantees a wild ride.
