Xbox Teases Project Helix Next-Gen Hardware, Fortnite Goes Free-to-Play, and Hideki Kamiya Wants a Safe Mode in Resident Evil

Microsoft previews its next-gen Project Helix hardware at GDC with PC and Xbox compatibility, Fortnite's Save the World goes free-to-play, and industry veteran Hideki Kamiya shares his thoughts on Resident Evil.

Microsoft just gave players their first official look at the future of Xbox hardware during a presentation at the Game Developers Conference. According to IGN South Africa, the company shared a brief overview of its next-generation console codenamed Project Helix. The system will feature a custom AMD system-on-chip and brings native support for both Xbox and PC libraries, signaling a major push toward hardware convergence. Microsoft also showed off a brief glimpse of the new Xbox Developer Kit, giving developers an early window into what they will be building on for the next cycle.

In other major industry news, Epic Games is finally opening the doors on the original Fortnite experience. The story-driven Save the World mode is transitioning to free-to-play in April. Long before battle royale dominated the cultural landscape and turned the title into a massive social platform, Save the World was the foundational pillar of the game. Making it free gives newer players a chance to experience where the phenomenon started without paying an entry fee.

Meanwhile, veteran director Hideki Kamiya has a specific request for Capcom regarding the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem. The original director of Resident Evil 2 admitted that he would love to see a non-scary mode added to the game because he prefers focusing purely on puzzles and combat rather than horror elements. It is a lighthearted take from industry royalty that highlights how different players approach survival horror.
