Marvel's Gambit has officially adopted the new codename Wyvern in Uncanny #32, following a cursed encounter with a dragon that is slowly transforming him into a monster.
After more than three decades of action, one of the most recognizable mutants in Marvel history is trying out a brand new identity. In the pages of Uncanny X-Men #32, Remy LeBeau officially debuted the codename Wyvern while fighting off an alien invasion. While fans have known him as Gambit since his debut back in 1990, his kinetic energy card throwing and signature staff are taking a backseat to a much heavier narrative shift.
This drastic change is the result of a long con involving some serious magical debt. Earlier in Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men run, Gambit stole The Left Eye of Agamotto from a dragon named Sadurang, triggering a curse with a steep price. Subsequent issues revealed that the theft would slowly drive him to madness, transforming him into a literal monster with cannibalistic urges alongside some terrifying new abilities.
For comic readers and gamers alike, character evolutions like this always spark plenty of community debate about status quo versus bold storytelling risks. Whether this draconic transformation sticks around for the long haul or serves as a temporary dark chapter for the beloved hero, it certainly gives fans something major to track as current Marvel storylines unfold.
