The cast of X-Men '97 discusses the emotional fallout, character arcs, and major confrontations of the season 2 finale in a recent interview with Polygon.
For anyone who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, the revival of the classic mutant saga has been nothing short of a masterclass in modern storytelling. The creative team behind X-Men '97 has managed to honor the complex, serialized storytelling of the original 1990s animated series while elevating the emotional stakes for today's audiences. In a recent interview with Polygon, members of the voice cast including Ross Marquand, Lenore Zann, and Adrian Hough sat down to unpack the devastating twists and narrative payoffs of the season two finale, offering a behind the scenes look at how these iconic characters came to life.
At the core of the season finale is the long brewing confrontation between Professor X and Apocalypse, a conflict spanning thousands of years due to time travel shenanigans earlier in the arc. Marquand, who voices both Professor X and the ancient villain, discussed the unique challenge of playing opposite himself while exploring the ideological divide between empathy and ruthless survival. According to Marquand, Apocalypse views Charles Xavier's compassion as a fatal flaw, setting up a psychological chess match that grounds the cosmic superhero action in deeply personal themes of sacrifice and identity.
As streaming platforms and serialized television continue to shape how we consume entertainment, shows like X-Men '97 prove that animated storytelling can resonate just as deeply as any live action blockbuster. The cast members reflected on how the original series shaped their own lives and careers, transforming childhood fandom into a collaborative creative space that connects directly with long time fans and new viewers alike.
