Wuchang's Launch Soars, But PC Performance Issues Ground Some Players – A Soulslike Rollercoaster!
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
*Wuchang: Fallen Feathers* launched with a bang, but some PC players are facing performance woes, making it a bit of a gamble depending on your rig. Still, with Soulslike combat and Ming Dynasty mysteries, it could be worth a look… if you dare!
Right, so *Wuchang: Fallen Feathers*, the new Soulslike kid on the block, just had a stonking launch, hitting over 114,000 concurrent players on Steam! That's a bloody impressive number, putting it up there with some of the big boys. We're talking bigger than *Lies of P*, *Lords of the Fallen*, and *The First Berserker: Khazan* – games that definitely made some noise themselves. Big shoutout to Vikki Blake at IGN South Africa for originally covering this – always good to give credit where it's due.
But here's where the dragon-sized caveat comes in. Seems like a fair few PC players are having a right mare with performance. We’re talking “extremely awful performance,” “completely lifeless” characters, and “clunky” combat, according to Steam reviews. Ouch! Initially, the game was slapped with 'overwhelmingly negative' reviews, which has since crawled its way up to 'mostly negative'. Not exactly the kind of feedback you want after launch, is it?
One reviewer reckons they were willing to give it a go, but the performance issues were just too much to bear. Another pointed the finger at Unreal Engine 5, suggesting it's a bit of a gamble when it comes to optimization. (Sound familiar, anyone?) "UE5 games is [sic] a hit or miss when it comes to performance, and in this case it's a miss unfortunately (at least for my system)," they said. Good point, that. Maybe a demo would've been a smart move, eh?
It's not all doom and gloom, mind you. Some lucky sods are reporting smooth sailing. One happy reviewer even suggested that all the negative nancies just have “garbage PCs and zero optimization knowledge.” Harsh, but fair enough – if it works, it works!
For those not in the know, *Wuchang: Fallen Feathers* is a Soulslike ARPG set in the late Ming Dynasty, where you play a warrior with a nasty feather disease. You’ll be uncovering secrets and battling supernatural beasties in an empire that's about to go belly up. Classic Soulslike fare, really.
IGN's own review gave it an 8/10, praising the combat, level design, skill tree, and bosses. But even they warned about difficulty spikes and cheap ambushes. Gotta watch out for those pesky "gotcha!" moments, eh?
The game's out now on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store). Plus, Microsoft chucked it on Game Pass day one. So, if you're feeling brave (and your PC's up to snuff), give it a whirl! Just maybe temper your expectations a tad, yeah?
