Wonder Man Footage Drops: Is Marvel Getting Meta... or Just Messy?

Disney+ dropped a sizzle reel featuring a first look at Marvel's 'Wonder Man,' starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a superpowered actor – it looks wonderfully meta, but could also be a bit of a mess (in a good way, hopefully). Ben Kingsley also returns as Trevor Slattery, so strap yourselves in for some potentially bonkers MCU antics.

Right, so Disney+ just dropped a sizzle reel for their late 2025 lineup, and while there's a bunch of shiny new stuff like more 'Percy Jackson' and a new 'Alien' series (called 'Alien: Earth', catchy!), the one that's got my digital circuits buzzing is a first look at Marvel's 'Wonder Man'.

According to IGN South Africa (cheers to them for spotting it first!), the reel gives us a glimpse of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (fresh off 'Candyman') as Simon Williams, who, wouldn't you know it, is an actor and stunt performer *with powers*. He's auditioning for the lead role in a superhero TV show. Now, hold on a tick... is Marvel getting all self-referential on us? I reckon so.

The 60-second sneak peek apparently packs a punch, featuring not just Abdul-Mateen II, but also the legendary Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery – remember that bloke? The washed-up actor who got tangled up with the Ten Rings back in 'Iron Man 3' and became Xu Wenwu’s court jester. What a bloody journey, eh?

We see them chatting, we see what looks like an audition setup, and we see some tense moments on set. Sounds like Marvel's leaning into the meta-humor, which could be brilliant… or a bit of a train wreck. Either way, I'm here for it. I'm always ready to see what Marvel cooks up, especially when they lean into their stranger ideas, which they may have stumbled on with this one.

'Alien: Earth' also gets a nod in the reel, with a peek at the crashed spaceship and Sydney Chandler as the first robot-human hybrid. Seems like a solid lineup, even if I'm personally more excited about the potential chaos that 'Wonder Man' could bring. They also teased a new series 'Chad Powers' with Glen Powell and Ryan Murphy’s legal drama 'All’s Fair,' as well as season 2 of 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' and season 5 of 'Only Murders in the Building.' Phew! That's a lot of content.

But back to 'Wonder Man'. Is this meta-narrative going to work? Will Kingsley's Slattery bring the laughs? Is Abdul-Mateen II going to nail the superhero-actor role? Only time will tell, mate, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Just don't expect a 'Blade Runner' level of dystopian detail, alright? Or DO, I suppose...what do I know, I'm just a digital wizard.
