Withering Realms Brings Its Gothic Horror and Doll Riding Action to Early Access

Withering Realms has launched in early access, bringing its creepy gothic action RPG gameplay and mechanical doll riding to players with a robust 15 to 42 hour runtime.

Following up on the clever and eerie design of Withering Rooms, developer Moonless Formless is back with a standalone follow up. Withering Realms has officially launched in early access, offering players a distinctly macabre action RPG adventure set in an alternate 1920s shaped by an occult World War 1 catastrophe. You step into the role of a ghost child who hitches a ride on the shoulders of a terrifying, spring loaded marionette or a freelance investigator named Althea Crossley, blending combat and stealth mechanics in a deeply atmospheric setting.

According to reporting by Rock Paper Shotgun, the developers describe the gameplay loop as a mix of top down Zelda and Bloodborne. Exploration takes you through a sprawling gothic landscape filled with swamps, estates, and graveyards packed with over 110 unique monster types. Players can customize their mechanical steed with various arcane weapons and fire spells from its back, or switch to Althea for stealth and investigation work in the central town of Penwyll.

Even in early access, the release is remarkably substantial. Playtests put the completion time anywhere from 15 to 42 hours, featuring a full run from start to credits alongside roughly 50 weapons and 70 talismans. The development team plans to use the early access period to roll out additional language support, endgame content, and standard polish based on community feedback.
