Why the Steam Controller is launching ahead of the Steam Machine

Valve explains why the new Steam Controller is launching ahead of the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, pointing to RAM shortages and independent production schedules.

Valve is moving forward with an independent release for its next generation input device. Following an earlier delay, the new Steam Controller goes on sale starting May 4, arriving in player hands well before the companion Steam Machine or Steam Frame hardware. In a recent interview with Polygon, Valve hardware engineer Steve Cardinali explained that the staggered rollout comes down to supply chain realities and component simplicity. Because the controller does not require high end memory modules, the team saw no reason to hold it back while broader hardware plans faced setbacks.

The ongoing global RAM shortage, heavily driven by massive infrastructure investments in AI data centers, has disrupted production schedules and pricing across the tech sector. Critical memory components are facing severe supply constraints, which forced Valve to reevaluate the release timeline for its upcoming living room ecosystem. Cardinali noted that keeping the controller back would serve no practical purpose while the team navigates these supply hurdles. Since the controller is fully compatible with existing setups, players can plug it into a standard PC, use it via mobile through Steam Link, or pair it with a Steam Deck right away.

Despite the interconnected nature of Valve's hardware ecosystem, Cardinali clarified that a simultaneous launch was never set in stone. While the controller and the upcoming Steam Machine are natural partners, they were always tracked as distinct product lines. Valve's main rule was simply ensuring the controller arrived first so players had their input device ready before the console drops.
