Why Rockstar is Dropping the GTA 6 Trailer 3 on Netflix First

Rockstar Games is partnering with Netflix to debut the third trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 on August 27, before releasing it for free on YouTube six hours later.
Rockstar Games is shaking up promotional playbooks yet again. The studio announced that the third trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 will debut exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET. It is an unexpected twist for the most anticipated entertainment release in history, especially since the first two trailers pulled in hundreds of millions of views on YouTube through traditional means. While Rockstar has a history of unconventional marketing, partnering with a subscription streaming platform for a major trailer reveal is a brand new frontier.
There are a few logical reasons behind the move. Rockstar and Netflix share an existing relationship, having brought the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy to mobile subscribers back in 2023. Additionally, security concerns have always plagued the studio, and leaning on a closed streaming ecosystem might be an attempt to prevent the kind of premature leaks that forced their hand during the rollout of the first trailer. Industry observers also point out that Netflix data shows a heavy skew toward TV viewing over mobile screens, which could mean Rockstar wants to showcase the game's actual visual fidelity on proper living room displays.
Even so, community reaction has been skeptical. Locking a major gaming drop behind a paid streaming service during the middle of a workday feels like a tough sell for players who are used to instant, free access on YouTube and social feeds. Fortunately, the wait is short. The trailer will go live for everyone else on YouTube and Rockstar's official site just six hours later at 9 p.m. ET. Whether this move brings a meaningful subscriber boost to Netflix or just leads to immediate pirated rips across the internet remains to be seen, but it certainly proves Rockstar is still marching to the beat of its own drum.
