Why Marathon Desperately Needs a Destiny Style Companion App

Exploring why Bungie's new extraction shooter Marathon needs a dedicated mobile companion app for inventory management and lore, much like the classic Destiny app.
Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is pulling in players who love deep gear loops, faction grinds, and sprawling sci-fi lore. As noted by Polygon in their recent feature, the game shares plenty of foundational DNA with Destiny. That shared design philosophy brings a specific friction point that veteran players know all too well. There is simply too much inventory management, vendor tracking, and resource hoarding to handle exclusively while sitting in a menu screen between frantic extraction runs.
In Destiny, the official companion app became an indispensable second screen that let players swap gear, inspect vendors, and organize clans from their phones without booting up the game. Marathon features complex Vault systems, contracts, and intricate upgrade paths that would benefit immensely from a similar mobile integration. When you are trying to coordinate with a squad on voice chat, spending ten precious minutes sorting through crafting materials and loot on a clunky in-game interface pulls you right out of the action.
Beyond inventory management, a dedicated app could completely change how players consume Marathon's narrative. The game is packed with unlockable text logs and lore drops, but reading blocks of text mid-session is rarely practical when your team is already queuing up for the next drop. Moving those lore tabs and vendor inventories to a clean mobile app lets players handle the administrative busywork on their own time. While the community is already attempting to build third-party tools, real progress depends on Bungie eventually rolling out an official API to support them.
