Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 is temporarily removing protagonist Yuji Itadori from the spotlight to focus on other characters during the Culling Game arc, a shift that opens the door for major battles and deeper world-building according to Polygon.
As Jujutsu Kaisen races toward the final episodes of Season 3, Part 1, the hit anime is preparing for a massive shift in focus that will temporarily bench its main protagonist. With only three episodes left before the current cour wraps up on March 26, MAPPA is leaning hard into the brutal Culling Game arc from Gege Akutami’s manga. Following the resolution of Yuji Itadori's conflict with Hiromi Higuruma, the narrative is pivoting away from Yuji to give other key players the spotlight. While losing the main character for a significant stretch is a bold move for any major franchise, this transition opens the door for some of the most anticipated and destructive battles in the entire series.
According to reporting by Polygon, this upcoming absence is far from a detour into filler territory. As the focus shifts to characters like Megumi Fushiguro and Yuta Okkotsu, viewers are diving headfirst into high-stakes skirmishes, including the chaotic Sendai Colony deadlock and brutal showdowns featuring Kinji Hakari and Maki Zenin. MAPPA has shown a willingness to adjust manga pacing and streamline events for dramatic effect, meaning we might still get strategic callbacks to Yuji while the narrative expands its scope. By stepping back from its primary hero, the series makes room for the wider roster to shine and raises the overall tension of the tournament.
For a community deeply invested in weekly streaming discussions, fan edits, and lore breakdowns, this pivot changes the entire viewing dynamic. Sideling the protagonist gives the supporting cast the heavy lifting, raising the stakes for the overarching conflict involving Kenjaku and Sukuna. When Yuji eventually returns to the fold, the psychological and physical toll of these branching battles will make his homecoming that much heavier. It is a confident storytelling choice that keeps the audience guessing, proving that stepping away from the main hero can sometimes elevate the entire universe.
