Insomniac Games explained that Marvel's Wolverine steers away from an open-world design to better reflect Logan's global, nomadic nature and deliver a focused, linear narrative.
Polygon recently caught up with Insomniac Games to discuss the studio's upcoming release, Marvel's Wolverine. While the team earned massive acclaim for their open-world Spider-Man titles, game director Mike Daly explained that a sprawling sandbox simply did not fit the nomadic nature of Logan. Because the character travels the globe and is never anchored to one location, the development team opted for a focused, linear action adventure instead of a checklist-driven open world.
Daly noted that the studio prioritized building a true Wolverine experience over checking off generic features that modern players might expect from a AAA release. This design philosophy also shaped the combat system, which pushes players to maintain aggression through three distinct rage phases. Each tier changes how Logan handles encounters, moving from gritty survival instincts to all-out offense while preventing the gameplay from feeling repetitive.
Set before the formation of the X-Men, the story drops players into a world where Logan is uniquely needed to solve problems on his own terms. By stripping away open-world bloat and focusing entirely on character authenticity, Insomniac aims to deliver a tight narrative experience that honors the source material without getting lost in modern AAA production creep.
