Why GTA 6 Misses Out on a Rare Awards Grand Slam

GTA 6 cannot achieve a clean sweep of all five major Game of the Year awards in 2026 because its November release date misses the Golden Joystick Awards cutoff.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is widely expected to dominate the upcoming awards season, but it will miss out on one specific piece of history. According to reporting by Polygon, Rockstar Games' upcoming blockbuster is ineligible for this year's Golden Joystick Awards because of its November 19 release date, which falls a week after the ceremony takes place. Because the community cannot play and vote on the game in time, a clean sweep of all five major industry trophies in a single calendar year is mathematically off the table.
This ruling means GTA 6 cannot join the exclusive club shared only by Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, both of which managed the elusive Big Five sweep of the Joysticks, The Game Awards, DICE, GDC, and BAFTA. However, the game can still claim a delayed version of the grand slam if it picks up the Golden Joystick trophy in late 2027, much like Skyrim managed back in 2011 and 2012. Skyrim famously missed its clean sweep due to BAFTA picking Portal 2 instead, showing that awards season always brings a few surprises even for massive titles.
Meanwhile, the current Golden Joystick nominations are highlighting other heavy hitters for the upcoming awards circuit. Titles like the James Bond adventure 007 First Light and the indie co-op game Big Walk pulled five nominations each, cementing their status as major contenders alongside the Rockstar giant. As the community fires up their consoles and PC rigs for the holiday season, the race for Game ofzul the Year honors is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years.
