Christopher Judge revealed why he chose not to star in the live-action God of War series, paving the way for Dave Bautista to take on the role of Kratos.
Christopher Judge recently opened up about his early involvement with Prime Video's upcoming live-action God of War series, revealing that he initially prepared to step into the role of Kratos himself. Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, the iconic voice actor shared that he started working out and even auditioned for the part, viewing it as a potential legacy project for his family. However, the grueling reality of leading a massive television production eventually made him reconsider.
At 62 years old, Judge realized he had no desire to return to the punishing lifestyle of a television lead, which involves constant dieting, exhausting workouts, and 18-hour filming days. He noted that his body and mind naturally pushed back against the demanding schedule, reminding him of his years starring in Stargate. Despite stepping away from the project, Judge holds no bitterness and expressed his support for the adaptation, though he remains mindful of the immense physical transformation required for the role.
Following a production setback when initial casting choice Ryan Hurst suffered an injury, Amazon recast the iconic Spartan role with Dave Bautista. As reported by IGN, Judge voiced genuine concern over Bautista needing to regain a massive amount of weight so quickly after leaning out in recent years, while still acknowledging that Bautista is a fantastic fit for the character. Even with some early bumps in the marketing campaign and previous behind-the-scenes criticisms from Judge regarding the showrunner's writer choices, fan enthusiasm is climbing as new and improved character looks emerge.
