Why CD Projekt Red Keeps Its Crossovers Strictly One-Way

CD Projekt Red explains that platform parity and a desire to avoid store-exclusive digital items are why their franchises appear in other games, but external crossovers never come to The Witcher or Cyberpunk.

We are used to seeing Geralt and Cyberpunk characters pop up everywhere from Fortnite to Diablo 4, but you will never find guest skins inside CD Projekt Red's own RPGs. Speaking to Polygon at BlizzCon, level design lead Miles Tost explained that the studio's reluctance to add external collaborations to games like The Witcher 3 comes down to a strict commitment to platform parity. The team wants every player to get the exact same complete experience regardless of where they purchase or play the game.

Rather than locking promotional gear behind specific storefronts or hardware, CD Projekt Red has historically preferred physical bonuses like exclusive hoodies or custom card sets for specific platform pre-orders. Tost noted that while the studio is happy to send Geralt off to battle demons in Blizzard's worlds, they want to avoid fragmenting the player experience at home with store-exclusive digital items. That means if you buy The Witcher 3 on Battle.net, you are getting the pure experience without corporate crossover clutter.

Even so, the studio is not completely closing the door on future inbound crossovers. Tost emphasized that the team remains open-minded and will gauge community feedback on recent collaborations before making any permanent rules. For now, expect our favorite witchers and edgerunners to keep making guest appearances across the broader gaming ecosystem while keeping their home titles strictly canon.
