Why a Dragon Age Trilogy Remaster Is Unlikely, According to Former Producer Mark Darrah

Former BioWare producer Mark Darrah explains that a Dragon Age trilogy remaster is unlikely to happen because current studio staff no longer know how to work with the series' older proprietary engines.

For players hoping to revisit the early days of Thedas on modern hardware, recent comments from former BioWare producer Mark Darrah bring some sobering news. In an interview with FRVR reported by Eurogamer, Darrah explained that a modernized Dragon Age trilogy is practically off the table because current BioWare staff lack familiarity with the proprietary engines used to build the older games. While the Mass Effect trilogy smoothly transitioned into the Legendary Edition back in 2021 largely due to its Unreal Engine foundation, the Dragon Age series presents a much steeper technical hurdle.

Unlike Mass Effect, the early Dragon Age titles relied heavily on proprietary technology rooted in the classic Aurora engine. Dragon Age: Origins ran on the Eclipse engine, and Dragon Age 2 used the Lycium engine, both of which are heavily modified iterations of Aurora. Inquisition shifted to EA's Frostbite engine, but the first two chapters remain trapped behind code that current developers do not know how to navigate. Darrah noted that even external support studios would struggle to help, as deep familiarity with that specific lineage of code is essentially gone from the active workforce.

This situation highlights a recurring issue in modern game development where proprietary engines and high turnover rates lead to lost institutional knowledge. Even though Darrah acknowledged that a remastered collection would likely perform well commercially, the investment required to spin up a dedicated team at BioWare would pull resources away from ongoing projects. For now, players wanting to experience where the Warden and the Champion started their journeys will have to stick to backward compatibility and older hardware setups rather than a polished, unified collection.
