White Wolf Is Quietly Laying the Groundwork for Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition

White Wolf is developing a new Vampire: The Masquerade project that strongly points toward a 6th Edition release, marking a return to in-house development and a pivot back to illustrated artwork.

The World of Darkness is getting ready for a major shift. According to an exclusive preview by IGN South Africa, White Wolf is actively developing a new tabletop roleplaying project that bears all the hallmarks of a 6th Edition release. While the studio is keeping official titles under wraps until a planned appearance at Gen Con later this year, representatives confirmed that this is a brand-new endeavor rather than a simple revision of 2018's 5th Edition ruleset.

For tabletop fans, the most significant change is structural. Since Paradox Interactive acquired White Wolf in 2015, the studio has largely functioned as a licensing house, outsourcing corebooks to external studios. This new project marks a return to in-house development, with White Wolf building out an internal team including a dedicated lead designer, editor, and art director. The system will still run on iterations of the classic Storyteller engine, and the team is currently targeting community playtests for the pre-alpha build in the near future.

Aesthetic changes are also on the horizon. White Wolf is moving away from the heavy photography style of the previous era, which creative director Jess Lanzillo noted often resembled a fashion magazine. Instead, the team is pivoting toward stylized illustrations and high-contrast artwork reminiscent of classic pre-V5 sourcebooks and graphic novels. While the return to original art and in-house development is a win for community authenticity, the heavier focus on a returning metaplot has some longtime players keeping a cautious eye on how the narrative unfolds.
