Weapons Director Zach Cregger Given Total Freedom for Next Resident Evil Movie

Following the success of Weapons, director Zach Cregger has been given complete creative freedom by Constantin Film to craft a brand new Resident Evil movie, set for a September 2026 theatrical release.
The Resident Evil franchise has a notoriously rough track record when it comes to film and television adaptations. While the early 2000s movies pulled in massive box office numbers, they rarely satisfied fans looking for genuine survival horror. Subsequent attempts to reboot the continuity on the big and small screens unfortunately failed to stick the landing. Now, horror fans have a real reason to pay attention again. Following the massive critical and commercial success of Weapons, director Zach Cregger has been handed total creative control over the next entry in the cinematic series, according to comments made by Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben to Deadline and reported by Eurogamer.
Berben noted that giving Cregger carte blanche was a straightforward decision after seeing his recent work in the horror space. The upcoming film is reportedly steering far away from previous movie and game continuities to let a fresh creative voice take the billion-dollar IP in a completely new direction. Cregger co-wrote the script alongside John Wick veteran Shay Hatten, and the cast features Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis. Sony Pictures is handling theatrical distribution, with the movie slated to hit cinemas on September 18, 2026.
For a community that has sat through decades of disappointing video game adaptations, this level of creative freedom is an encouraging sign. Instead of retreading old lore or chasing corporate safe bets, the studio is backing a proven horror auteur who knows how to subvert expectations. If Cregger can bring the same tense atmosphere and sharp pacing that defined his recent work to the sprawling world of Umbrella Corporation, this might finally be the adaptation the fanbase has been waiting for.
