OtherSide Entertainment has dropped the PvPvE multiplayer focus from Warren Spector's Thick as Thieves, shifting the upcoming immersive sim toward single player and two-player co-op play.
Immersive sim veteran Warren Spector and the team at OtherSide Entertainment are shifting directions for their upcoming title, Thick as Thieves. When the project was first teased last summer during Day of the Devs, it caught the attention of stealth fans by promising a competitive multiplayer immersive sim. Players were supposed to race against rivals on shared maps to pull off high stakes heists. According to a recent Steam blog post covered by Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio has decided to drop the competitive multiplayer elements entirely to focus on single player and two-player co-op.
OtherSide Entertainment stated that playtests revealed the team was having more fun with cooperative and solo mechanics as the world of Kilcairn took shape. By removing the competitive layer, developers can double down on dynamic stealth systems without balancing the chaotic variables of opposing players. While losing the multiplayer angle makes the project feel slightly more traditional, it is hard to blame the studio for pivoting away from the brutal live service market. Launching a niche competitive game in the current climate is a massive financial risk, especially for a genre known for critical acclaim rather than blockbuster sales numbers.
We will not have to wait long to see the reworked vision in action. A fresh gameplay trailer is scheduled to debut during the upcoming Triple I Initiative showcase. Whether this shift results in a tighter, more focused immersive sim or simply a safer product remains to be seen, but player expectations are shifting rapidly as the community prepares for the new footage.
