Warner Bros. is bringing the next DCU Superman game to a theme park

Warner Bros. is launching a new Superman game called Defenders Unite, but instead of hitting consoles or PC, it is a physical theme park attraction on the Burbank studio lot.

Fans have spent decades waiting for a proper digital sandbox where they can finally play as the Man of Steel without running into the infamous legacy of Superman 64. Warner Bros. is finally answering that call with a new interactive project called Superman Experience: Defenders Unite, but there is a major catch for anyone hoping to boot it up on a console or PC. According to a report by Polygon, this new DCU game is actually a physical walkthrough attraction launching on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, timed for Superman Day.

The attraction uses next-generation motion capture technology, active 3D glasses, and high-definition audio to give visitors the illusion of flying alongside Superman while unlocking powers and working as a team. Guests even have their scores logged during the experience so friends can compete against each other. It sits comfortably in the modern trend of gamified theme park rides, following in the footsteps of attractions like Disney's Web Slingers and Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run. Developed in partnership with New Peak Interactive, the attraction also features a Doghouse of Solitude minigame where visitors can play catch.

While the scope of the project makes sense given James Gunn's recent success in revitalizing the DC cinematic universe, it leaves the broader gaming community in an awkward spot. Unreal Engine concept videos and fan projects have continually proven that players are starving for a high-end, third-person open world Superman game. For now, anyone wanting to step into Clark Kent's boots will have to book a trip to Southern California rather than downloading a title on their platform of choice, keeping the historic gaming curse alive just a little bit longer.
