Warner Bros. Double Downs on Live Service Games – Are They Mad or Just Bold?

Warner Bros. is seemingly undeterred by the failure of *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and is hiring for another live service game set in the DC Universe, leaving many to wonder if they've learned any lessons at all.

Right, so Warner Bros. seems to have learned absolutely nothing from the, shall we say, *underwhelming* reception of *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League*. Despite the game's rather spectacular face-plant, and the subsequent shutdown of *MultiVersus*, they're apparently diving headfirst back into the live service pool. Fair dinkum, are they alright?

According to a job listing spotted on the Warner Bros. Games Montreal website (cheers to Game Rant for digging this up!), they're on the hunt for an Executive Producer to helm a "AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalog." The successful applicant will be expected to "oversee all phases of development, from concept to post-launch live operations." Sound familiar? It should. It's the exact same bloody plan they had for *Suicide Squad*.

Now, I reckon most folks would be running screaming in the opposite direction after taking a $200 million hit on a game. But not Warner Bros.! They're doubling down, apparently believing that the problem wasn't the live service model itself, but… well, who knows what they think the problem was. Maybe the Justice League wasn't getting killed enthusiastically enough?

The announcement comes after some fairly dramatic restructuring at Warner Bros. Games, with a stated focus on four key franchises: *Harry Potter*, *Mortal Kombat*, *DC*, and *Game of Thrones*. So, we know it'll be in one of those universes. A *Game of Thrones* live service game? Imagine the microtransactions for new swords and dragon-riding licenses… shudder.

Of course, the big question is: will anyone actually *want* another Warner Bros. live service game after the *Suicide Squad* fiasco? The original Game Rant article notes that Rocksteady, the studio behind *Suicide Squad*, suffered layoffs in January 2025. And before that, they halved their QA department last September. Anonymous sources (always fun, aren't they?) claim the development process was a right mess, with priorities shifting more often than a chameleon in a disco.

But what does this all *mean*? Well, on one hand, maybe, just *maybe*, Warner Bros. has learned something. Perhaps they'll actually listen to player feedback this time, build a compelling world, and avoid the repetitive grind that killed *Suicide Squad*. Maybe this new project will surprise us all.

On the other hand… *Suicide Squad's* failure also reportedly contributed to the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game from Monolith Productions (the folks behind *Shadow of Mordor*), and the shuttering of that studio. So, yeah, colour me skeptical.

Ultimately, I reckon this is a gamble. A big, potentially foolish gamble. But hey, sometimes the most spectacular failures are born from the most audacious risks. Let's just hope this one doesn't take down another beloved studio in the process.
