Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Brings Open-World Spell Hunting to 2027

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is an open-world action RPG from former Ubisoft developers that focuses on spell collection, environmental sandbox combat, and organic exploration.
Wizards of the Coast recently pulled back the curtain on Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, a new action RPG developed by studio Invoke, which features industry veterans from franchises like Far Cry and Watch Dogs. Set in the mist-shrouded domain of Darkon, the game casts players as a weapon master named Kaatri. Early in her journey, she teams up with the ancient witch queen Tasha, voiced by Resident Evil Village star Maggie Robertson, who grants her a sprawling arsenal of magical abilities to hunt down across a dense open world.
Unlike traditional linear progression trees, many of the game's spells are hidden across the environment as optional discoveries, serving as versatile tools rather than just combat stats. Players can use familiar D&D mainstays like Eldritch Blast and Black Tentacles alongside new additions like Tasha's Leash, which lets Kaatri pull and hurl objects and enemies alike. Developers have designed the sandbox so spells can interact with each other and the environment, such as combining a summoned rainstorm with chain lightning to amplify your damage output.
While the team is drawing heavily from D&D lore, they are consciously lowering the barrier to entry for players who have never rolled a 20-sided die. Kaatri enters the setting as an outsider, allowing newcomers to learn the lore organically through exploration rather than homework. Slated for release in 2027, the title leans heavily into dense world design and player freedom, trading massive empty spaces for meaningful encounters around every corner.
