Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 leans into the winning formula of its predecessor while adding a new agile playable character, dynamic environmental hazards, and much greater level variety.
When Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun launched in 2023, it proved that the grimdark universe is a natural home for fast paced retro shooters. Developer Aurouch Digital clearly understood what made that first game click, because the upcoming sequel is focusing on refinement and variety rather than a total reinvention. Recent hands on previews from Polygon detail how Boltgun 2 takes the core formula and expands on it in all the right ways, giving players fresh reasons to dive back into the carnage.
One of the biggest additions is the introduction of a second playable character, Nyra Veyrath, a Sister of Battle Celestian who brings a much faster playstyle to the table. While original protagonist Malum remains a heavy, hard hitting space marine, Nyra trades some of that sheer bulk for catlike agility. She can slide across arenas, build up serious momentum, and lunge at targets with her power sword, adding a brand new dynamic to combat encounters.
The developers also addressed one of the main criticisms of the first game by overhauling the level design to be far more unpredictable. Instead of sticking strictly to uniform environments, players will battle through diverse new biomes like hazardous swamps filled with carnivorous plants and freezing industrial facilities featuring destructible ice bridges. By building these levels with full three dimensional meshes and layering the nostalgic retro aesthetic on top, Aurouch Digital is managing to modernize the boomer shooter format without losing its classic arcade soul.
