Digital Extremes revealed Warframe: Tau at Tennocon, introducing a massive second solar system featuring a noir-inspired biomechanical city hub, a detective Warframe voiced by Matt Mercer, and a late 2026 release window.
Digital Extremes used its annual Tennocon showcase to finally reveal Tau, the long-awaited second solar system coming to Warframe. Following last year's flashback narrative in The Old Peace, this upcoming expansion introduces players to the home turf of the Sentients faction through a heavily noir-infused, biomechanical aesthetic. The centerpiece of the new update is Fornax, a vertiginous and decaying city hub built within massive organic structures that blends high-tech decay with classic detective tropes. Players will be introduced to Brysko, a chain-smoking Chimera Warframe voiced by Matt Mercer, who brings a hardboiled inner monologue and a card-slinging combat style to the update's introductory missions.
Fornax is split into distinct vertical tiers, ranging from lower-level dens plagued by a fictional substance called the Bloom to a high-end neon casino featuring Portau, Warframe's very first in-game card game. According to reporting from Rock Paper Shotgun, the creative direction behind the city draws heavily on real-world themes of addiction and gambling. For players looking to jump straight into the new content, there is a catch. You will need to progress through the existing story and clear out the current solar system before gaining access to Tau, though Digital Extremes is also planning updates for the Origins system alongside the expansion.
The Tau release is part of a busy roadmap for the venerable sci-fi shooter. Ahead of the main expansion, Digital Extremes has slated a smaller autumn update called Iceblade of Narin, which will introduce a new ice-element Warframe and a rework for the classic 2013-era Banshee. An August sidestory is also on the way, bringing back the retro messaging style from Warframe: 1999 alongside fresh tracks from the in-game virtual boyband On-lyne. For a game that has maintained its player base for over a decade through constant reinvention, Tau represents a massive escalation in both worldbuilding and scale.
