Vanillaware Classic Muramasa Returns with Modern Upgrades in Revenant Blades

Vanillaware's classic action RPG Muramasa is returning in early 2027 as Muramasa: Revenant Blades, featuring 4K resolution, new combat systems, and all six playable character storylines available from the start on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and PC.

Vanillaware's beloved action RPG is making a major comeback. During the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo and IGN South Africa revealed Muramasa: Revenant Blades, a modernized release of the cult classic that originally launched on the Wii in 2009 and later reached the PlayStation Vita in 2013. This new edition brings the blood-soaked samurai epic into the current generation with a gorgeous 4K resolution upgrade, revamped combat, completely reworked weapon systems, and brand-new gameplay modes.

For players who missed out on the handheld era, this release packages the complete saga from day one. Fans can step into the shoes of original protagonists Momohime and Kisuke alongside the four characters introduced in the Vita version, namely Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki. The narrative focuses on a mythical conflict over cursed blades forged by the legendary Senji Muramasa, weapons that grant immense power at the cost of bloodlust and madness. Notably, the game lets players experience all six unique character storylines in any order they choose right from the start.

The industry has long wondered if Vanillaware's older catalog would escape platform captivity, and Revenant Blades answers that call by dropping platform exclusivity entirely. Instead of remaining locked to Nintendo hardware, the game is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC in early 2027. It is a welcome move for preservation and accessibility, ensuring that a masterpiece of 2D action design can find a massive new audience across console and PC ecosystems.
