Valve is Discontinuing Physical Steam Gift Cards to Combat Fraud

Valve is permanently ending the production of physical Steam gift cards to combat persistent gift card scams targeting vulnerable consumers. Retail stores will not receive restocks as remaining inventory sells out, pushing buyers toward digital alternatives.

Valve is pulling the plug on physical Steam gift cards at retail locations, bringing an end to a product line that has been running since 2012. As reported by Polygon, the company confirmed on a support page that it will stop restocking the cards this year due to widespread fraudulent schemes. Scammers have routinely targeted vulnerable populations, particularly older individuals, by coercing them into purchasing physical Steam cards and reading off the codes to settle fake debts or emergency expenses. Despite working alongside law enforcement and retailers over the years to implement countermeasures, Valve found that bad actors continually adapted their tactics.

While the decision safeguards consumers from ongoing exploitation, it creates a frustrating hurdle for family members who rely on traditional holiday and birthday shopping habits. Explaining digital storefronts to non-gaming relatives has always been a holiday challenge, and physical cards provided an easy bridge for gift-givers who vaguely knew their kids liked PC games. Remaining stock will phase out through 2026, shifting the entire ecosystem to online gifting.

To bridge the gap, Valve is working to streamline its digital gifting infrastructure. Improvements like guest checkout aim to make buying digital credit easier for people who do not normally use the platform. Even so, digital cards currently require knowing a recipient's specific account details or email address, lacking the convenience of picking up a cardboard card at the grocery checkout. Friends and family members of PC players will simply need to adapt as the platform completes its transition to a purely digital gift economy.
