Dark Horse is expanding the Usagi Yojimbo universe with Kaitō ’84, a five-stage spin-off arriving in March 2026 that moves the legendary rabbit bloodline into 1980s Osaka.
Stan Sakai's legendary rabbit samurai is trading feudal history for neon lights. According to an exclusive report by Tasha Robinson at Polygon, Dark Horse is launching a five-issue mini-series titled Usagi Yojimbo: Kaitō ’84 on March 11, 2026. This release marks a major milestone for the franchise as the first spin-off not written by Sakai himself. Instead, the creative duties fall to writer Zack Rosenberg and artist and letterer Jared Cullum, who bring a fresh perspective to the expansive comic universe.
The new series centers on Kaitō, a descendant of Miyamoto Usagi operating as a cunning thief in 1984 Osaka. Dark Horse teases that Kaitō channels his ancestor's legendary spirit through a rebellious, modern lens, kicking off the narrative with a high-stakes heist centered on a mythical spear. Cullum shared that working on the project fulfills a lifelong dream rooted in carrying a pocket-sized Usagi action figure as a kid during the early 1990s. The creative team is rounded out by an impressive lineup of variant cover artists, including Kevin Eastman, David Petersen, Daniel Warren Johnson, and Sakai himself.
For digital collectors and physical trade paperback hoarders alike, expanding enduring universes into unexpected eras is a smart way to keep legacy IP feeling vital. While modern gaming and streaming consume plenty of our entertainment hours, rich graphic storytelling continues to shape the transmedia worlds we love.
