US PlayStation Owners Face Potential Payouts Following Antitrust Class-Action Settlement

US PlayStation players who bought digital games on PSN between 2019 and 2023 could be eligible for a payout following a preliminary 7.85 million dollar antitrust settlement.

US PlayStation users could soon see some money back in their digital wallets following a preliminary court approval of a 7.85 million dollar class-action settlement. Originally detailed by Saveri Law Firm LLP and highlighted by IGN, the lawsuit took aim at Sony for allegedly eliminating competition and monopolizing the market through the closed ecosystem of the PlayStation Network store. For a platform where digital ownership and closed storefronts are standard across console ecosystems, this case directly challenges how platform holders control their digital economies and pricing.

Players who purchased specific digital games on PSN between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, are automatically included in the settlement unless they actively opted out. The affected catalog covers major titles including Destiny, Destiny 2, Nier: Automata, Resident Evil 4 Remake, The Last of Us, and Until Dawn. Even players who have since closed their PSN accounts remain eligible, though they will need to reach out directly to the legal teams handling the case to claim their share.

While the preliminary agreement is in place, payouts are not happening immediately. A final fairness hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2026, to review the payout allocations and attorney fees. Sony has consistently denied the anti-competition claims throughout the legal process. Even so, this settlement adds to growing regulatory and legal scrutiny over closed console marketplaces. As digital-first purchasing continues to dominate across console, PC, and mobile, the outcome of this case could spark wider conversations about how platform storefronts operate.
