Upcoming D&D Game Warlock Skips Baldur's Gate 3 Romance Mechanics for a Focused Story

Invoke Studios has confirmed that its upcoming D&D game Warlock will not feature romance options, choosing instead to focus on a tightly crafted, cinematic narrative rather than a massive open-world RPG.
Following the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, expectations for any upcoming digital Dungeons and Dragons experience are naturally sky high. Larian Studios set a new benchmark for player freedom, branching narratives, and deeply personal companion romances. However, Invoke Studios is taking a distinctly different approach with its upcoming project, Warlock, opting for a tightly focused narrative instead of sprawling open world systemic choice.
According to an interview with Polygon at Gamescom 2026, studio head Dominic Guay confirmed that romance options are entirely off the table for the protagonist, Kaatri. Because her character is driven by an urgent, singular quest, the developers chose to prioritize a curated story rather than a hundred hour sandbox. While players will still experience character growth and build a found family dynamic with companions like an imp named Skev, traditional romance mechanics will not be featured.
For players who treat RPGs as social spaces and virtual hangouts where relationship building is half the fun, this shift might require an adjustment in expectations. Yet, there is a clear upside for today's busy gamers who often struggle to finish massive sprawling epics. By trimming the runtime and narrowing the scope, Invoke Studios is aiming for a high fidelity, cinematic adventure that delivers a complete story without demanding an entire month of your free time.
