An official Baldur's Gate 3 prequel novel exploring Astarion's history with Cazador Szarr is releasing on September 29, launching a broader publishing partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Random House Worlds.
For anyone who spent hundreds of hours unravelling the secrets of the Sword Coast, the story of everybody's favorite snarky vampire spawn is far from over. As reported by Game Rant, an official prequel novel focused on Astarion and his grueling centuries of servitude under Cazador Szarr is officially slated for release on September 29. While tie-in fiction can sometimes feel like a quick cash grab, this project carries genuine weight for the community because it digs into one of the most compelling backstories in modern role-playing history.
This release is part of a much larger publishing initiative stemming from a new partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Random House Worlds. The deal maps out a steady rollout of new books stretching across 2026 and 2027, with at least four titles scheduled to hit shelves in 2026 alone. For a player base that treats digital worlds as second homes and deeply engages with character lore across streaming and social platforms, expanding these universes beyond the screen feels like a natural evolution of how we consume entertainment.
Of course, seasoned gamers have every right to approach tie-in media with healthy skepticism. Too often, expanded universe novels rely on cheap nostalgia rather than meaningful narrative depth. However, given the massive cultural footprint of Baldur's Gate 3 and the sheer depth of its character writing, exploring Astarion's dark past through a dedicated novel gives writers a chance to flesh out the Forgotten Realms in ways a branching RPG cannot always accommodate.
