Ubisoft is reportedly closing its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios and restructuring its Barcelona office, resulting in an estimated 380 layoffs as part of ongoing corporate cost-cutting measures.
The toll of ongoing industry downsizing continues to mount as Ubisoft moves forward with a sweeping organizational overhaul. According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, the publisher is closing its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios alongside a major restructuring of its Barcelona office. This latest wave of cuts is projected to displace roughly 380 developers, continuing a difficult trend for a company that has already shuttered six subsidiaries since 2023 in an effort to streamline operations.
These cutbacks arrive during a period of heavy transition for the publisher, which recently reorganized its internal teams into five distinct creative houses. This new structure includes Vantage Studios, a joint venture formed with Tencent in late 2025 that now oversees powerhouse franchises like Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. Meanwhile, the Barcelona studio, which previously contributed to unannounced AAA projects and the troubled development of Beyond Good and Evil 2, will now narrow its focus entirely to the Rainbow Six franchise.
For players and the broader community, these recurring corporate contractions highlight the human cost behind major game development. While leadership points to long-term financial sustainability and leaner production pipelines, the reality on the ground is a shrinking talent pool and further uncertainty for teams working on supportive technologies and massive open-world projects. As major publishers restructure to chase market stability, the community must continue advocating for the developers who actually build the worlds we play in.
