Ubisoft Reportedly Developing Two New Far Cry Games, Including a Player-Driven Open-World Project

A new report reveals that Ubisoft has two Far Cry games in development, including a traditional single-player entry codenamed Blackbird and a player-driven open-world project codenamed Kodiak being built by Vantage Studios.

Ubisoft is shaking up its approach to its major franchises, and the Far Cry series is leading the charge with two unannounced games currently in development. According to a recent report by Insider Gaming, which was covered by Eurogamer, the publisher is working on a traditional mainline entry codenamed Blackbird alongside a brand new project codenamed Kodiak. While Far Cry 6 launched back in 2021 and left the franchise dormant for years, these new projects signal a major push to get the sandbox shooter back into rotation across PC and consoles.

The project codenamed Kodiak has officially passed its conception phase and entered production at Vantage Studios, a new subsidiary established by Ubisoft and Tencent. Described as an open-world first-person shooter, Kodiak aims to put player interactions and player-driven stories at the center of the experience. Meanwhile, the mainline Far Cry 7, known internally as Blackbird, is being handled by Ubisoft directly. Despite facing internal delays and development hurdles in the past, Blackbird is reportedly back on track as a single-player experience with an accompanying multiplayer or co-op component.

For players who have been waiting years for a follow-up to Yara, this dual-track approach offers a glimpse into how Ubisoft plans to handle its massive intellectual properties moving forward. Partnering with Tencent through Vantage Studios for Kodiak suggests a shift toward more collaborative, online-focused designs, while Blackbird appears to cater to fans of the traditional campaign structure. Neither game has an official release window yet, but as Blackbird is further along in development, it will likely be the first project to see a public reveal.
