Ubisoft Confirms New Ghost Recon in Development for 25th Anniversary

Ubisoft has officially confirmed a new Ghost Recon game is in development during its 25th-anniversary stream, alongside a major 4K update for Ghost Recon Wildlands.

Ubisoft is finally giving tactical shooters what they have been asking for. During a recent anniversary stream celebrating 25 years of the franchise, live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa officially confirmed that a brand-new Ghost Recon game is in active development. While the studio kept a tight lid on trailers, screenshots, and even a final title, developers did open applications for the Ghost Recon Insider Program, inviting players to sign up for upcoming closed tests. According to reporting by Polygon, this new project follows years of industry leaks pointing to a title codenamed Project OVR, which reportedly shifts away from recent open-world looter-shooter mechanics to embrace a grounded, first-person tactical focus.

Alongside the tease of the next generation, Ubisoft threw a bone to long-time fans by dropping a substantial update for 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands. Titled Last Rites, the update brings native 4K and 60 frames-per-second support to current-gen consoles alongside a brand-new mission and deep gameplay customization options for weather, enemy behavior, and damage values. To sweeten the deal for the community, Wildlands is completely free to play through August 10, giving squads a chance to jump back in while we wait for concrete details on the upcoming sequel.

For a franchise that defined tactical co-op a generation ago, the pivot back to a focused, gritty military experience makes a lot of sense. Recent entries struggled to capture the distinct identity that made titles like Wildlands and Breakpoint hits with friend groups, especially as players gravitated toward tighter, more purposeful tactical loops. As the industry watches to see how Ubisoft handles these closed tests, the community is cautiously optimistic that the series is returning to its tactical roots.
