Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the Watch Dogs franchise remains important to the company, but no new games are currently in active development and its upcoming movie still lacks a release date.
If you have been holding out hope for a return to the world of hacker syndicates and connected urban grids, you will need to wait quite a bit longer. According to reporting from Game File, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently addressed investors regarding the status of the Watch Dogs franchise. While Guillemot insisted that the intellectual property remains an important brand for the company moving forward, he confirmed that no new games are currently in active development. This puts the series in a holding pattern as Ubisoft figures out its next steps, especially with massive open world titles like Grand Theft Auto 6 dominating the conversation in the genre.
The franchise has experienced a rocky path since its ambitious debut back in 2014. While the original game launched to massive hype, it struggled to meet every expectation, though the San Francisco set sequel managed to win over fans with its vibrant tone. The momentum came to a halt with 2020's Watch Dogs: Legion. That entry tried to innovate by letting players recruit and control any non-player character in the city, but the feature resulted in a mixed reception that left the future of the series clouded in uncertainty.
Outside of the gaming space, the franchise still has a live action movie adaptation floating around in development limbo. The film reportedly wrapped production two years ago and even underwent reshoots last year, yet Ubisoft has provided zero promotional material and still has not attached a release date to the project. For now, players should not expect any digital or silver screen adventures from Watch Dogs within the next few years as the publisher reevaluates the brand's identity.
