Two VHS Store Sims Launched on Steam Together, But Only One Became a Mega-Hit

Two indie games about running a VHS rental store launched on Steam within a week of each other, but Retro Rewind became a massive viral hit while Rewind 99 found more modest success.

The indie development scene often moves in mysterious tandem, but watching two games with nearly identical premises land on Steam within a week of each other is still a rare sight. Writing for Polygon, Patricia Hernandez recently detailed how Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator and Rewind 99 both hit the PC storefront in March with the exact same pitch of running a classic VHS rental shop. Despite the shared nostalgic hook, their trajectories on the platform could not have been more different.

Retro Rewind quickly blew past expectations, selling over 100,000 copies and rubbing shoulders with heavyweight titles on the Steam top sellers list during the Spring Sale. Developed by a two-person team in Canada, the game found massive traction with Twitch streamers and YouTube creators, helping it break out into mainstream publications like Popular Science. Meanwhile, its competitor Rewind 99 took a broader approach, offering an open-world sandbox with action RPG elements, co-op, and a larger scope. While Rewind 99 pulled in a respectable peak of over one thousand concurrent players and maintained a very positive rating, it missed the explosive viral momentum of its rival.

This kind of simultaneous invention happens all the time in game development, usually driven by broader cultural trends. The current wave of cozy management sims proves that players love leaning into hyper-specific nostalgia. Even though some community members tossed around accusations of copying, these parallel releases highlight how execution, scope, and streamer visibility ultimately dictate whether a clever indie concept becomes a quiet success or a massive phenomenon.
