Paramount is bringing back Steven Spielberg and is in talks with Michael Bay to helm a new live-action Transformers movie following recent box office struggles.
Paramount is making major moves following its massive acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, and the studio is looking to its past to fix its biggest franchises. According to a recent report by Deadline, Paramount is bringing back Steven Spielberg to oversee the creative direction of a brand new live-action Transformers film as an executive producer. Alongside him, original franchise director Michael Bay is currently in early talks to return to the director chair for the eighth main entry in the series.
The studio has also locked in screenwriter Jason Fuchs, whose credits include Wonder Woman and Argylle, to pen the script. Reports indicate that Bay was won over by Fuchs' script after stepping away from the property for nearly a decade following 2017's The Last Knight. Franchise veteran Lorenzo di Bonaventura is also returning to produce, reuniting the core creative team behind the five blockbuster films that grossed over $4.4 billion worldwide.
This aggressive pivot comes after recent franchise entries struggled to find their footing at the box office. While films like Bumblebee and the animated prequel Transformers One earned critical praise, they failed to pull in the massive numbers Paramount expected, ultimately leading the studio to scrap its planned Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover in favor of separate projects. For players and movie fans who grew up with the explosive 2000s era of the franchise, this reunion represents a high stakes gamble to recapture mainstream box office dominance.
