Tony Gilroy's Not Happy: Did the Emmys Drop the Ball on 'Andor'?

The Emmys seem to have overlooked Diego Luna and Genevieve O'Reilly for their roles in 'Andor,' and creator Tony Gilroy isn't exactly thrilled about it; he reckons their long-term character work deserves more recognition.
Right, so the Emmy nominations dropped, and the internet's gone properly bonkers arguing about who got snubbed. Turns out, Tony Gilroy, the brains behind 'Andor', has a few thoughts about his own show. (Spoiler alert: he's not exactly thrilled with the whole situation.)
According to *Deadline*, Gilroy reckons Diego Luna (Cassian Andor himself) and Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma, everyone's favourite rebel politician) deserved some serious recognition. And fair dinkum, he's got a point. "There are a lot of performances that I wish were recognized," Gilroy told Deadline. "Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly. There are a dozen performances.”
He went on to say that Luna and O'Reilly's performances weren’t just about the flashy moments; they were about building complex, compelling characters over a *bloody* long haul. We're talking 24 episodes, mate! He believes that their performances are the glue that holds the whole thing together. Basically, he's backing them to become Star Wars legends, Emmy nomination or not. “These aren’t great moment-to-moment [performances],” Gilroy said of the two snubs, as well as others he hoped to have been recognized. “These are epic, long-term character studies that they’ve done over 24 episodes. I think the ultimate victory is that these performances will be celebrated and discussed for years to come. I feel confident about that.”
Now, 'Andor' didn't exactly get ignored. It racked up a respectable 14 Emmy nominations. Still, that puts it behind the *Mandalorian*, which bagged 24 noms for its first season and 15 for the second. Sound familiar? Big budget gets more love, even if the more thoughtful indie project might have more heart (and better writing in some opinions, ahem!).
It's also worth remembering that O'Reilly has been playing Mon Mothma since *Revenge of the Sith* back in 2005 (though her scenes were cut, ouch!). She also reprised the role in *Rogue One* and *Ahsoka* and even lent her voice to *Star Wars Rebels*. Talk about commitment! That’s dedication worthy of recognition, even if the Emmy voters missed the memo.
'Andor' premiered in September 2022, and its second and final season is slated to arrive in April 2025. So, plenty of time for Luna and O'Reilly to prove the Emmy snobs wrong, eh?
