Amazon's upcoming Tomb Raider remake has divided fans after revealing modern progression mechanics like skill trees, crafting, and a Focus meter.
Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics recently dropped a deep dive into Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, revealing how the upcoming 2027 remake plans to update Lara Croft for modern platforms. According to a behind-the-scenes video on the official Tomb Raider YouTube channel, game director Raul Siquera and design director Jason Epps walked viewers through a completely reimagined combat and progression suite. The core additions include a Focus meter that lets players slow down time and pull off cinematic acrobatics, alongside a skill tree and a Resident Evil style crafting and herb gathering system.
While the Focus meter has received a relatively warm reception for making combat look fluid, the inclusion of traditional RPG skill trees and crafting has drawn sharp criticism from long-time fans. Over on community hubs like ResetEra, players are pushing back against what they see as unnecessary progression bloat. Many fans are questioning why a seasoned treasure hunter like Lara needs to learn basic capabilities from scratch, especially since the original 1996 release kept things straightforward without modern leveling mechanics.
To bridge the gap between classic purists and fans of the recent Survivor Trilogy, the development team has confirmed that players can bypass many of these systems entirely. Players can tackle the entire adventure using just Lara's iconic dual pistols if they prefer a pure throwback experience. Furthermore, the skill tree features a unique twist where skill points are unlocked by finding in-game artifacts rather than grinding out experience points. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to launch on February 12, 2027, across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Polygon first reported these details.
