Todd Howard Confirms Fallout 5 Will Sit at the Very End of the Franchise Timeline

Todd Howard revealed in a recent interview that Fallout 5 will take place after the events of the Amazon Prime television series, making it the latest entry chronologically in the franchise timeline.
The massive resurgence around the Fallout franchise shows no signs of slowing down, especially with the second season of the Amazon Prime adaptation now live. Between players diving back into Fallout 76 and revisiting the Mojave in New Vegas, the community is keeping a close eye on any scrap of news regarding Fallout 5. While the next major single player entry is still a long way off behind The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda is starting to lock in the foundational details for the post nuclear epic.
In a recent interview with the BBC, game director Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 will take place in a world where the events of the television series have already happened or are currently unfolding. Because Fallout 76 occupies the earliest chronological slot at 2102, and the television show sits at the furthest point in the timeline around 2296, Howard's comments all but cement Fallout 5 as the newest game in the series timeline. It will take place no earlier than the late 2290s and could potentially push the universe well into the 2300s.
This forward moving timeline matters a great deal for players who care about continuity in long running universes. Fallout 76 proved that the series can successfully explore different eras without breaking established lore, and the television show has successfully expanded the cultural footprint of the IP for a massive new audience of cross platform gamers and streaming fans. As Bethesda balances its upcoming slate, knowing that Fallout 5 will build directly upon the most recent narrative milestones gives the community plenty of worldbuilding threads to theorize about while we wait for the first real gameplay trailer.
