Todd Howard Admits The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Taking Too Long, But Insists Production Is Moving Well

Bethesda shares a new development update on The Elder Scrolls 6, with Todd Howard admitting he wishes production moved faster while studio leadership highlights massive technical advancements and the need for careful polish.

Waiting for the next chapter in Tamriel has tested the patience of millions, and it turns out even the people making the game share that frustration. In a recent interview with Game Informer, reported by Eurogamer, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard admitted that he wishes the development of The Elder Scrolls 6 went a little faster. However, he was quick to reassure players that the massive project is progressing really well. The studio is managing its workflow through overlapping production cycles, a method Bethesda has used for years to juggle multiple massive RPGs without entirely stalling out.

The scale of modern hardware allows for ambitious technical leaps that simply were not possible when Skyrim launched back in 2011. Studio director Angela Browder pointed out that the team is working with an endless set of possibilities today, noting that the technological evolution between the original Oblivion and modern remasters highlights how far the industry has traveled. With the majority of the Bethesda team now officially dedicated to the project, the focus is squarely on realizing a massive open world that meets the high expectations of longtime franchise fans.

While community frustration over the long wait since the initial 2018 teaser is understandable, design director Emil Pagliarulo emphasized that patience is essential for a game of this magnitude. Pointing to frequent industry delays like those seen with Grand Theft Auto, Pagliarulo argued that taking the time to properly polish a game is always better than rushing an unfinished product to store shelves and digital storefronts. Players across PC and console ecosystems will just have to keep waiting, but Bethesda insists the final result will be worth the extended oven time.
