Toadally New Voices: Mario Kart World Gets a Vocal Overhaul – And Veteran Fans Are Gobsmacked

Nintendo's given *Mario Kart World* a vocal facelift, replacing long-time voice actors for Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong, leaving fans with a mix of nostalgia and curiosity. Seems like even iconic characters aren't immune to a bit of a spring cleaning!
Right, so Nintendo's been pulling a few rabbits out of its hat lately, and one of the fluffiest (and potentially most controversial) is a complete refresh of some iconic character voices in *Mario Kart World*. Seems like Samantha Kelly, the voice behind Princess Peach and Toad for a whopping 18 years, got the boot faster than a blue shell aimed at last place. Ouch.
According to IGN South Africa, Kelly's decade-plus run ended with the launch of *Mario Kart World*, without so much as a, 'So long, eh, partner?' It's a bit of a shocker, innit? After voicing Peach and Toad in over 70 games since 2007's *Mario Strikers Charged*, you'd reckon she'd be a shoe-in for the latest installment.
But fear not, dear racers, because we've got fresh blood in the kart! Paul Castro Jr. and Courtney Lin have stepped up to the mic to give Toad and Peach some new vocal cords, respectively. Castro Jr. took to X (formerly Twitter, because branding is hard) to announce he's voicing the male Toads you hear during your races. "Been playing on my trips and it's so much darn fun. Can't thank Nintendo enough for letting me live out this childhood dream," he posted. Sounds like someone's chuffed!
Lin echoed the sentiment, stating, "I can finally say… I’m the voice of Princess Peach and Baby Peach in Mario Kart World! Eternally grateful for Nintendo, for trusting me to help carry the legacy of this icon." She added a touching nod to her predecessors, particularly Samantha Kelly, acknowledging the weight of the role and promising to do her best. Fair play to her, that's a classy move.
Now, this isn't the only voice change-up happening in the Mushroom Kingdom. Takashi Nagasako, who voiced Donkey Kong for a respectable 21 years, is also out, replaced by Kouji Takeda (who already voiced DK in the Japanese dub of the *Super Mario Bros. Movie*). It's a full-blown vocal revolution! What's behind it all, eh? Nintendo's being tighter than a drum about credits and pre-release info, making it difficult to say for certain. Are they trying to control the narrative, or just keen on keeping surprises under wraps? Probably a bit of both.
Of course, the biggest seismic shift in the Mario voice universe was Charles Martinet stepping down as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi after nearly 30 years of glorious, "Wahoo!"-filled service. That left some pretty big boots to fill, and the new cast has massive expectations to meet.
Look, change is inevitable, even in gaming. While some veteran fans are probably clutching their retro consoles and muttering about the good old days, others are likely keen to see (or rather, *hear*) what these new voice actors bring to the table. Will it feel the same? Probably not. Will it be *bad*? Not necessarily. It's just… different. And in the ever-evolving world of gaming, sometimes different is exactly what we need. Or, at least, what Nintendo thinks we need. And what Nintendo wants, Nintendo usually gets.
