CD Projekt Red is raising the minimum PC requirements for The Witcher 3 ahead of a new expansion called Songs of the Past, making an SSD and Windows 11 mandatory for guaranteed performance.
CD Projekt Red is updating the minimum PC requirements for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, introducing a hard shift that requires players to use solid-state drives and Windows 11. Originally reported by Eurogamer, this technical leap forward is arriving in preparation for a brand new expansion titled Songs of the Past, which is currently scheduled to launch next year. While the core game is over a decade old, CD Projekt Red is clearly building out the underlying framework to handle fresh content and modern visual standards.
The shift away from older architecture naturally sparked community anxiety regarding operating system compatibility, prompting clarification from the studio. Karolina Niewgowska, director of player experience and safety at CD Projekt Red, addressed player concerns directly on the company forums. She clarified that the updated requirements do not mean the game will actively block Windows 10 users from launching the title, but the studio can no longer guarantee stability or performance on an operating system that lacks official Microsoft support and upcoming GPU driver updates.
For modern PC players who have already migrated to current hardware, these changes reflect the inevitable reality of game development pushing forward. CD Projekt Red wants to leverage newer graphics drivers and technical optimizations to deliver the best possible experience for the upcoming expansion. However, the studio also confirmed that players who are not ready to upgrade their setups will have the option to revert their game version when the update officially drops.
