The Witcher 3 is getting a weapon that was impossible to build a decade ago

Polygon reveals that CD Projekt Red is finally adding a chain weapon to The Witcher 3 in the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion, overcoming the technical hurdles that made it impossible back in 2015.

Polygon reports that CD Projekt Red is bringing a brand new weapon to The Witcher 3 in the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion. While Geralt famously used a chain against a striga in the 2007 game's opening cinematic, the developer had to leave the weapon out of the 2015 base release due to technical limitations. Speaking with BBC News, game director Jakub Rokosz explained that recent upgrades implemented for the upcoming remaster finally allowed the team to make the chain feel natural and fluid.

Senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki noted that the chain will be particularly useful for crowd control against new enemy types like the Swarmion, allowing players to keep foes at a distance or pull them in close for brutal new finishers. Polygon's hands-off preview at Gamescom showed the weapon breaking enemy defenses and giving players a fresh alternative to the standard crossbow.

The upcoming expansion is currently slated for a 2027 release, arriving just ahead of The Witcher 4 in 2028. It is a solid reminder that singleplayer heavyweights can still pull massive engagement years down the line, especially when developers continue to push technical boundaries to fulfill long-standing fan requests.
