The Witcher 3 Expansion Songs of the Past Relies on a Massive External Team

CD Projekt Red reveals that its upcoming Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past, features a development team of roughly 190 people, largely driven by external partner Fool's Theory while core internal studios focus on upcoming sequels.
CD Projekt Red recently shared details from a financial earnings call regarding Songs of the Past, the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3. According to the studio, roughly 190 developers are currently assigned to the project. Interestingly, this headcount rivals the size of the team that built the base game over a decade ago. Game director Konrad Tomaskiewicz previously noted that the original development team averaged around 160 people, only peaking near 205 when extra support arrived closer to launch.
Despite the massive workforce, the vast majority of the developers building Songs of the Past are not actually at CD Projekt Red. Instead, external partner Fool's Theory is handling the heavy lifting for the project. Joint CEO Micha Nowakowski confirmed during the call that the expansion sits in an advanced production phase, with Fool's Theory housing the primary development team while CD Projekt Red maintains creative oversight to keep the experience aligned with the franchise standard.
Financial slides from the earnings report indicate that CD Projekt Red's internal staff is heavily focused on future flagships, leaving a maximum of just 19 internal employees categorized under other projects who could be tied to the expansion. With major resources dedicated to building The Witcher 4 and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, outsourcing this nostalgic return to the Continent allows the studio to expand its classic universe without pulling core teams away from next-generation projects.
