Following the cancellation of the television series, Dire Wolf secured the book license to create War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, an asymmetric board game covering all 14 novels that launches on Kickstarter today.
When Prime Video canceled its adaptation of The Wheel of Time, fans assumed the visual journey of Robert Jordan's sprawling fantasy epic was over for good. Fortunately, board game publisher Dire Wolf had other plans. According to a report by Polygon, the team managed to secure the book license for the entire 14-volume series rather than abandoning their work. That decision has culminated in War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, a deep, asymmetric tabletop experience that officially hits Kickstarter today.
Designed by Andy Clautice, Mike Mihealsick, and Ryan Schoon, the game pits two players against each other in a struggle for the Westlands. One player controls the Dragon Reborn Rand al'Thor and the forces of the Light, while the opposing player commands the Forsaken and the Shadow. Drawing strategic inspiration from classic territory control titles like War of the Ring, participants must manage resources, recruit iconic characters from a roster boasting thousands of potential figures, and contest major missions across multiple rounds.
Recognizing the sheer scale of the source material, the design team built two distinct ways to play. Hero Mode offers a more approachable, character-driven experience for fans who want a streamlined session, while Epic Mode unleashes the full, multi-hour apocalyptic scope of the Last Battle. With the $90 base game now live on Kickstarter, it is a fascinating pivot for a franchise that lost its screen presence, proving that tabletop adaptations can often out-scope streaming budgets when it comes to honoring source material.
