The Wheel of Time Is Headed to the Tabletop in 2027 With War of the Dragon

Dire Wolf has confirmed a 2027 release for War of the Dragon, a massive strategy board game adapting Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series that pulled in over $1.16 million on Kickstarter.

As reported by Game Rant, developer Dire Wolf has officially confirmed a 2027 release window for War of the Dragon, the first officially licensed board game adaptation of Robert Jordan's massive fantasy epic. The project easily crushed its initial crowdfunding goals on Kickstarter, pulling in over $1.16 million from more than 6,000 backers. That massive financial backing signals a clear appetite for deep tabletop adaptations among modern players who love sprawling fantasy universes.

Designed by Mike Mihealsick, Ryan Schoon, and Andy Clautice, the game attempts the daunting task of squeezing fourteen massive novels into a single strategic experience. Gameplay primarily pits two players against each other in a battle for control of the Westlands, with one side commanding the forces of the Light and the other leading the Shadow. Players can choose between the more accessible Hero Mode, the massive conflict of Epic Mode, or a dedicated solo experience that was unlocked during the campaign.

What makes the design particularly interesting for longtime fans is how it handles the source material. Instead of focusing on just one book, the game draws characters, locations, and narrative beats from across the entire saga, starting roughly around the events of The Shadow Rising. Alongside standard head-to-head play, the package includes options for a four-player team variant so friends can split the burden of defending or conquering the world.

While crowdfunding success does not always guarantee a smooth translation to the table, Dire Wolf brings plenty of prior strategy experience to the project, having previously adapted properties like Dune. For fans who missed out on the initial crowdfunding campaign, a physical retail version titled the Dragon Reborn Edition will also hit store shelves through partner outlets in 2027.
