Polygon highlights the ten best Super Nintendo games available on Nintendo Switch Online, celebrating an era of legendary platformers, puzzle games, and RPGs.
While the Nintendo Switch Online library is missing some major third-party heavyweights like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, it still houses an incredible collection of first-party masterpieces. Reporting from Polygon highlights how this era represented a golden age for developers like Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, bridging the gap between the original NES innovations and the jump to 3D on the N64.
The curated top 10 list leans heavily into these historical juggernauts, spanning everything from the frantic platforming of Kirby Super Star and Donkey Kong Country 2 to inventive oddities like Mario Paint. Puzzle fans also get a win with Panel de Pon, known stateside as Tetris Attack, proving that tight, classic mechanics hold up just as well today as they did in the nineties.
At the very top of the lineup sit timeless genre definers like Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Super Mario World. These titles continue to serve as masterclasses in game design, proving that great mechanical depth and art direction transcend hardware generations for modern players dipping into retro history.
