The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially surpassed one billion dollars globally, making it the first film of 2026 to reach the milestone and securing Nintendo and Illumination's grip on the top two video game adaptation spots.
Nintendo and Illumination have another massive box office hit on their hands as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially crosses the one billion dollar mark worldwide, according to reporting by Deadline. Released a little over two months ago, the film stands as the first movie to cross this major financial milestone in 2026. Even though it arrived on digital video on demand platforms last month, the cosmic sequel continues to pull in ticket sales in select theaters.
While the new film boasts massive numbers, it still sits behind its predecessor. The original 2023 release holds the all-time video game adaptation crown with one point three six billion dollars in total earnings. Even so, Nintendo and Universal Pictures now officially control the two highest-grossing big screen video game adaptations in history. Domestically, the galaxy hopping sequel leads the United States box office for the year so far with four hundred twenty eight million dollars, alongside five hundred seventy one million dollars from international markets.
Despite mixed reviews from critics who pointed out a lack of narrative depth beneath the dazzling visuals, the movie has clearly resonated with family audiences and franchise fans alike. Shigeru Miyamoto has strongly backed Illumination's creative direction, and a third installment feels practically guaranteed at this point. Before that team returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, however, Illumination's next Nintendo project is slated to be a Donkey Kong movie starring Seth Rogen in 2028, continuing the studio's dominance in the cross-media entertainment space.
