The Mandalorian and Grogu Delivers Star Wars' Strangest Father-Son Dynamic Yet

Polygon reports on The Mandalorian and Grogu introducing a buff, adult Rotta the Hutt voiced by Jeremy Allen White, bringing a bizarre new spin to Star Wars generational family themes.

Star Wars has always built its narrative backbone around complicated relationships between fathers and sons. From Luke and Vader to Han and Kylo, the galaxy far, far away loves exploring how familial legacy shapes identity. The latest entry, The Mandalorian and Grogu, continues this tradition with Din Djarin and his tiny green companion, but the film's most fascinating and confounding father-son dynamic actually comes from a completely different direction. According to Miles Surrey reporting at Polygon, the movie introduces an adult Rotta the Hutt, voiced surprisingly by Jeremy Allen White, who turns out to be a gladiatorial fighter with washboard abs.

In the film, Din Djarin takes a job from Jabba's relatives to rescue Rotta from a prison planet in exchange for intelligence on remaining Imperial warlords. However, the rescue mission quickly takes a bizarre turn. Rotta is not actually being held against his will, but is instead thriving in the spotlight of the arena. More importantly, he wants nothing to do with Jabba's criminal empire or the violent legacy of his bloodline. He spends much of his screen time explaining that he is not like his father, echoing classic Star Wars generational themes through the surreal lens of a buff space slug.

While the concept of Jabba's heir rejecting his inheritance is genuinely compelling on paper, the execution leaves the audience in a tricky spot. The script, co-written by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor, struggles to balance the inherent absurdity of the character with the serious dramatic beats of generational trauma. Rotta's arc mostly boils down to repeating his rejection of the family business while hanging out with Grogu. It is a massive swing for the franchise, proving that Star Wars is still willing to test viewer suspension of disbelief in the most unexpected ways possible.
