Studio Madhouse brings Shinobu Kaitani's acclaimed manga Liar Game to Crunchyroll, delivering a tense psychological survival thriller that predated and heavily influenced modern hits like Squid Game.
The psychological thriller genre has a new heavyweight contender. Studio Madhouse, the creative force behind anime icons like Parasyte and Perfect Blue, has finally brought Shinobu Kaitani’s acclaimed manga Liar Game to the screen. Polygon recently reviewed the first two episodes of the Crunchyroll release, and the adaptation wastes no time establishing the same ruthless, high-stakes psychological tension that modern viewers came to love in massive hits like Squid Game. For anyone tracking the lineage of modern survival thrillers, this premiere proves essential viewing.
The setup drops viewers straight into a brutal financial arena. College student Nao Kanzaki finds herself unexpectedly roped into the Liar Game Tournament with a suitcase containing one million dollars, tasked with protecting her funds from rival contestants. Her radical honesty makes her an immediate target for betrayal, forcing her to team up with a recently released con man named Shinichi Akiyama to survive. Critics note that while the first episode sets up a grim, dog-eat-dog premise, the second episode leans heavily into the cold calculus required to outsmart opponents in a rigged digital and physical economy.
While the original manga ran from 2005 to 2015 and inspired live-action adaptations, this new anime version arrives at a time when audiences across PC, console, and mobile platforms are deeply obsessed with interactive dread, betrayal mechanics, and high-stakes social deduction games. The thematic DNA connecting Liar Game to modern media is undeniable, especially considering how heavily it influenced titles like Squid Game. For players who love watching streamers break down complex social strategies or navigate deceptive multiplayer lobbies, Liar Game translates those exact thrills into a gripping episodic format.
